So I have been keeping a weekly journal as this has went on. I guess if anyone wants to see, please speak up!
When I say I stared the year out with a bang I literally mean it. This happened the first week of January. And everyone said 2020/2021 was bad lol. I had been playing at a coed volleyball open gym. I hadn’t been jumping or anything overly ‘athletic’ but I jumped or rather hopped to one side. I guess we were playing long enough that my already worn out shoes from college had loosened up enough to allow my foot to rotate in my shoe. Sideways! I heard a pop and landed on the ground on my feet. It really didn’t hurt that bad actually but I knew something was off. I thought it had just been similar to when I rolled my ankle back in high school. I was able to walk off the court but I had to limp. I decided to go home then. I RICED HARD (RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate) and took some ibuprofen that night (in hopes of preventing some swelling). That night and the next day I was unable to walk on it. It had swollen up big time. The next day I could walk on it but it was iffy and I felt like those half dead zombies in a movie when they are walking on an injured leg but still able to chase you….I'm sure this is how it looked too haha! Sunday I went and got an X-ray in hopes of solidifying no fractures. The doc said nothing was broken but with the swelling and location to go to a specialist if it continues for over a week. The next day was then Monday and I did go to work as I was able to walk. It hurt sure, but nothing crazy (not quite zombie like). I sucked it up and carried on with my work. I also had a boot on at this point. I continued to work for that full week. However, I did not wait a full week to see a foot specialist because I knew something was wrong. In my experience, sprains start to improve after a few days and proper care. This was not happening. I got in to see a specialist on Tuesday who told me about this Lisfranc. He said it was baaad! I did get a second opinion as surgery was suggested. My opinion, don't mess with your foot! But, if you are like me then we are in this together! So surgery was recommended/practically required if I wanted to walk normal in the future. And my thoughts and experience, with surgery are that you want to get it right the first time. Feet are very important and take you everywhere. Shout out to those of you who are struggling with foot issues! Oof, ladies and gents I feel for you.
To add some comforting news, both surgeons mentioned they’d get an ORIF (open reduction internal fixation) due to my age. It would also allow for more mobility. I always ask questions like, “What if this were your foot, what would you do?” They mentioned if this were their family members or themselves, they would also get an ORIF. It was also doubly comforting that they said practically the same things.
I had surgery two weeks after the initial event.
